Marijke De Roover (1990-2026)

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Marijke De Roover (1990-2026).

Having just concluded her second solo exhibition at Upstream Gallery, we were excited for a future of adventures with Marijke, whose talent, humour and wit will be so greatly missed. Our heartfelt condolences go out to her family and friends.

Marijke De Roover was a part-time professional karaoke singer, meme connoisseur and taxi driver; widely known for her queer and feminist performance work

In her artworks, she dealt with questions regarding the nuclear family, feminism/motherhood, ethics of reproduction, and love, romance and compulsory heteronormativity under late capitalism.

A commemoration will take place on August, 29 at KIOSK, followed by a drink at her favourite bar ‘Fatima’ to celebrate Marijke’s life. Details to be announced.

Marijke held a Masters in Fine Arts from KASK School of Arts, Ghent (BE) where she was nominated for the Start Point Prize, Prague (CZ).

In 2020 she had her first institutional solo at Museum de Pont in Tilburg (NE). Her work has been shown at among others: Centre Pompidou, Paris (FR), Museum fur Neue Kunst, Freiburg (DE), David Roberts Art Foundation (Evening of Performance), London (UK), Garage Rotterdam (NL), Brakke Grond, Amsterdam (NL), Garage, Moscow (RU), BOZAR, Brussels (BE), ARCADE, London (UK), Goethe Institute, Dusseldorf (DE) and Museum Angewandte Kunst, Frankfurt am Main (DE), KIOSK, Ghent (BE), Annie Gentils, Antwerp (BE) & TATJANA PIETERS, Ghent (BE).

She was represented by ARCADE, London (UK) en Upstream Gallery, Amsterdam (NL).
