Marinus Boezem:
On October 23, 1979, as evening fell, from 5:15 to 7:15 p.m., I recorded the sound of a colony of starlings flying back to the city, which perched like a black cloud in a tree on the Bellinkstraat [in Middelburg]. For weeks the noise had been so enervating for the nearby residents that they talked of nothing else. Commotion everywhere. I made an audio recording of this in real time, in which the chiming of the clock in the Lange Jan and the carillon are essential for experiencing the time. I experienced this whole process, the constant starting up of the birds, the audible movement of air by ten thousand birds, as a sculpture.”

Marinus Boezem’s work is deeply connected to Vleeshal. Just as Boezem has been a driving force behind the Vleeshal’s development through dozens of exhibitions and projects, so too has this late-Gothic space been a defining influence on his work. An oeuvre that revolves around the relationship between architecture and nature, and around freedom, space and immateriality. Gothic architecture remains a constant source of inspiration in this regard. As Boezem puts it in the documentary Hollandse Meesters in 2013: ’Gothic architecture is where the spirit, the power of the mind and creativity reside. The cathedral is a conceptual framework within which you can organise your thoughts.’
